Keynote Presentation"Moving Beyond the Average Treatment Effect: A Look at Power Analyses for Moderator Effects in Cluster Randomized Trials"

In the past 15 years, the field has made substantial progress in terms of how to design cluster randomized trials (CRTs) with adequate statistical power to detect the main effect of treatment. However, designing a study to detect the main effect of treatment may not be sufficient. It is quite reasonable that context matters in these studies; thus, designing studies to examine for whom and under what conditions a program is effective is critical. That is, studies must also be designed to detect moderator effects. 

Power calculations for moderator effects at the individual and cluster level for two and three-level CRTs will be presented. In addition, the implications of these power calculations for the overall design of CRTs in education will be discussed.
